Advances in Environmental Accounting & Management aims to advance knowledge of the governance and management of corporate environmental impacts and the accounting for these, including issues related to measurement, valuation, and disclosure. It also aims to increase the awareness of management, accounting practitioners, investors and other stakeholders of the financial and social consequences of corporate environmental impacts, encouraging greater environmental accountability and responsibility. The first chapter in this volume (Dr Yousuf Kamal) is set in the context of the Bangladeshi garment industry, while the second chapter (Delphine Gibassier) explores the practice of water accounting. The remainder of this volume presents three chapters from the 3rd French Conference on Social and Environmental Accounting Research, guest edited by Sophie Giordano-Spring, Jonathan Maurice and Charles H. Cho. These chapters consider sustainability in Canadian CPA teaching programmes (Emilio Boulianne and S. Leanne Keddie); mandatory environmental reporting in France (Juliette Senn); and CSR reporting practices in Brazil and South Korea (Hyemi Shin and Adrian Zicari).

Corporate social performance has come of age. In a business environment characterized by its perpetual state of flux, the ability to recognize and react to global forces becomes paramount. The fallout of such rapid change - the fast-paced developments in communications and technology, the continual change to global markets, shifting demographics, the homogenization of personal values - have all contributed to the widespread new interest in issues such as ecology and environment, human rights and diversity, health and well-being, and communities. All of these issues are now potential liabilities for companies, and are very much back on the agenda for business. Once regarded as peripheral management concerns, they are now recognized as hard to predict and hard for business to deal with when they go wrong. This book offers an insight into how corporate social performance can be measured and why this is an important aspect of corporate social responsibility. Using detailed case studies, it provides readers with the foundations for understanding and applying corporate social performance, providing a stakeholder framework by which corporate social performance can be measured, alongside a detailed consideration of the value of different stakeholder measures. The book also applies this framework to new social accounting standards, enabling the reader to consider the validity and appropriateness of these standards. The increasingly important role of the internet for corporate social reporting is also considered.

In celebration of Allan Hoffman's 70th birthday, a symposium entitled Gels, Genes, Grafts and Giants was held in Maui in December 2002. This symposium, organized by The University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials (UWEB) NSF Engineering Research Center, was a great success, with many excellent papers presented by scientists from all over the world.
All those who made oral or poster presentations at the symposium, but also those who worked with Allan Hoffman in the past or worked in similar research areas were invited to submit articles for special issues of the Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition. The special issues of the journal will also be published in one hardcover book (expected beginning 2005).

Proteins, Cells and Materials contains a collection of articles, which constitute together the complete Festschrift in honor of the 65th birthday of Dr. John L. Brash. For the first time these articles - published previously in several special issues of the Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition - have been compiled into one comprehensive volume. Over the past 40 years John Brash, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, has distinguished himself in the field of biomaterials. Much of his efforts have focused on detailed studies of bloodaEURO"surface interactions, particularly those of plasma proteins. His multi-faceted approach recognises the importance of hemodynamics, transport and surface phenomena in the gross effects that result from bloodaEURO"surface contact. In this book articles on the most recent development in these areas are collected and will thus provide a wealth of information of current research to specialists in the above-mentioned fields.
